In HP dv8301nr we've found Turion64 1.8GHz cpu and in Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z we have a pleasure to find Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz central processor unit.
We think that dv8301nr has better screen with its 17" inch size than Vaio VGN-FE31Z with its 15.4" large screen.
HP dv8301nr laptop have finer maximum screen resolution(1440x900) than other laptop(1280x800).
Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z model we've tested had more RAM (2GB) than HP dv8301nr (0.5GB).
The RAM memory in use on both laptops is DDR2.
Travellers should keep in mind that Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z is only 2.82kg in weight, but HP dv8301nr is much heavier with 3.63kg.
Video card inside dv8301nr is ATI Mobility 200M and other laptop has Nvidia Go 7600 inside.
We like that video card on HP dv8301nr have its own video memory (128MB) and therefore its faster since it doesn't use main memory and mainboard controller is less loaded.
Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z laptop is more suitable with its 200GB hard disk for storing large amounts of media information like music .
We do not have preference on their hard disk speed - 5400 rpm have both.
If you have bluetooth devices if you buy HP dv8301nr you will need external bluetooth which is not excellent idea.
Infrared is built-in just in Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z.
Firewire useful for some video equipment communication is built-in both laptops.
Internal modem is available in both models and you will need it at some location without proper Internet connection.
These laptops have cardreaders inside them.
Disadvantage of both is lack of DVI output for connection to some modern TFT monitors.
Existance of web camera in Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z makes this model excellent for using in Internet telephony. Other notebook hasn't one.
Both came with XP Media Center on them.
